The 2019-20 Kangaroo Island bushfires
During the 2019 – 20 Kangaroo Island bushfires, Flinders Chase National Park was severely impacted, with about 96% of the park burnt. Since then, the park has experienced significant regrowth and continues to provide a lush haven for wildlife.
The completion of the new visitor centre is a significant milestone in the Department for Environment and Water’s bushfire recovery efforts. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the support and patience of Kangaroo Island residents and businesses.
Key infrastructure has been restored throughout Flinders Chase National Park, including:
- Flinders Chase National Park Visitor Centre
- Remarkable Rocks Boardwalk and car park
- The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail
- Heritage-listed May’s and Postman’s cottages
- Black Swamp Boardwalk and Platypus Walk
- 22 km of road within the park
Additionally, the Rocky River campground is set to reopen later in 2024. Across the island, Kelly Hill Caves and Cape Borda Day Visitor Area have also been revitalised.
As Kangaroo Island continues to rebuild, this natural playground is flourishing. The island’s resilient landscape invites visitors to explore its unique wildlife, savour its delectable food and wine and marvel at its breathtaking scenery.
