The trail is located in the south west of Kangaroo Island and encompasses new and upgraded trails through Flinders Chase National Park, Kelly Hill Conservation Park and the Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area. Along with encounters with some of the island’s most unique wildlife, the trail provides access to the iconic attractions of Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, Weirs Cove, Hanson Bay and Kelly Hill Caves.
What are my walk options?
You can walk the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail as:
- a self-guided walker using the campgrounds provided (you will need to carry your own equipment).
- a self-guided walker using the campgrounds provided and a commercial operator will transport your personal equipment from one campground to the next.
- a customer of a commercial tourism operator either using the campgrounds provided or staying in private accommodation off of the trail.
Why do I need to book my walk?
The booking system regulates the number of walkers departing each day. This is to avoid overcrowding, to preserve the wilderness experience for everyone, to reduce our environmental impact and to ensure sustainable management of the track and campground facilities.
How many people are allowed to depart each day?
A maximum of 12 independent walkers and 36 walkers guided by commercial tour operators, totaling 48 walkers (including guides) are permitted to depart each day. These will be a mix of independent and guided walkers with some camping along the trail (campgrounds cater for 24 walkers) and some staying in off-trail accommodation. Of the commercial tour operator walkers, only 12 are permitted to camp overnight, meaning there are a maximum of 24 campers at each campground per night.
How much does it cost to walk the trail, what is included and why is there a fee?
Independent walkers | |
Adult | $206.00 |
Child (4 – 15) | $120.00 |

The trail is not recommended for children under the age of 10 due to the distances travelled, exposed coastal environment and often adverse weather conditions.
When is the best time to walk?
The best time to go is March to November however every season on Kangaroo Island offers something different, so you’re sure to have an amazing experience whenever you visit. Kangaroo Island’s weather is variable year round and changes in temperature and conditions can occur suddenly and without much warning given the island’s exposed location. You’re likely to experience a bit of everything on your walk – sunshine, wind and rain. Walkers should be aware that on catastrophic fire days the park will be closed and walkers will be required to leave the trail.
